Immediate extraction and implantation
What is tooth extraction and immediate implant placement?
In a conventional dental implant procedure, dental implants are inserted into the jawbone, covered with gingiva (2-stage surgery) or fitted with healing caps (1-stage surgery), then left to osseointegrate with the jawbone for several weeks before the restoration (tooth(s), bridge or prosthesis) can be made and fitted. This is known as delayed loading of the implant.
Immediate tooth extraction and implant placement is a procedure that removes a damaged tooth and replaces it with a dental implant in the same session. The patient does not have to wait for the bone to heal after the
Osseointegration of the implant may take a further three to six months, and implants should not be disturbed during this period. Any movement or pressure could interfere with healing, delay the process and even cause the implant to fail.

What are the advantages of placing an implant on the same day as a tooth extraction?
Time-saving
By performing extraction and implant placement in a single operation, the number of appointments is reduced, as is the total healing time. Normally, the tooth is extracted and the bone heals 4 to 5 months before the implant is placed, then heals again 2 to 3 months before the crown.
By performing the 2 procedures on the same day, patients save between 4 and 6 months’ healing time.
Bone preservation
In the months following a tooth extraction, bone loss occurs at the site of the removed tooth. This often has no impact if the patient wishes to have a dental implant quickly, but in some cases the bone loss will be greater and will require a bone graft to provide an adequate foundation for the implant.
If an implant is placed immediately after extraction, the jawbone is partly preserved, as the implant stimulates the bone in the same way as a natural tooth root.
Patient comfort
Performing both procedures in a single session reduces the need for anaesthesia and minimizes the discomfort associated with multiple procedures. There is also a reduction in post-operative pain and discomfort (as there are no incisions).
Can immediate implant placement be combined with immediate loading?
There are two common situations in which Dr. Arnaud will suggest during your initial consultation that you directly load the implant that will be placed on the day of extraction.
When the tooth removed is a front tooth (premolars, canines, incisors), especially in the upper jaw.
When all the teeth in a jaw need to be removed and several implants are placed on the same day to hold a prosthesis or bridge.
How do I know if I am eligible for this type of procedure?
During the initial consultation, Dr. Arnaud will perform a medical history, clinical examinations and X-rays/scans to determine whether implant treatment is feasible in your situation.
Health problems such as poorly balanced diabetes, treatments such as biphosphonates or even excessive smoking are contraindications to this type of treatment.
